Clinical Training

Clinical Training Program for Primary Care Providers

Program Description

This is an intensive mini-residency, preceptorship type of training featuring clinical instruction in the context of hands-on direct patient care.

Target Audience

This is an advanced level training program that targets physicians, senior-level residents in training, physician assistants and nurse practitioners. This program is geared toward both general primary care practitioners wishing to gain additional experience in the area of HIV management, as well as advanced clinicians planning to work directly in the area of HIV medical care. Because of direct patient interaction, California State medical licensure is required. Out of state and international applicants without licenses can usually be accommodated on an observational basis.

Program Goals

The goals of this program are 1) to increase general clinical competency in assessing and managing patients with HIV disease; and 2) to help advanced HIV clinicians remain up-to-date with current practice guidelines and standards of care.

Dates Offered

The USC mini-residency is offered weekly year-round, with the exceptions of some holiday weeks. Additional training opportunities, as listed below, are offered on an as-requested basis.

Additional Training Opportunities

  • Focused Experiences:
Opportunities are available for additional training in both specialty-focussed clinics and community HIV clinics. The specialty-focused clinics include pulmonary disease, neurology, hematology-oncology, dermatology, obstetrics and gynecology, metabolic disorders, and research, all based at the LAC-USC HIV clinic 5P21. The community clinic opportunities are primary care experiences based at various outlying HIV clinics, such as the AIDS Healthcare Foundation. Pediatric and adolescent HIV medicine training is available both at the LAC-USC Maternal Child HIV Clinic, as well as through Children's Hospital of Los Angeles (CHLA). All focussed experiences are arranged on an individual, as-requested basis.

  • Extended Training Schedules:
Two to four week extended training programs are available for clinicians planning to provide on-going HIV clinical care. Focussed experiences are integrated into this program, along with the core schedule.

  • Flexible Training Schedules:
The core rotation may also be completed through an intermittent schedule, such as one day per week. This is arranged on a case-by-case basis.
