Area of Expertise:

Viral and virally linked disorders such as human immunodeficiency viral infections, cancer and autoimmune diseases. A recognized molecular pharmacologists in HIV, oncology and hematology.

Professional Biography:

Dr. Stan Louie received his Bachelor of Science in biochemistry from the University of California in Los Angeles. He received his Doctoral degrees in Pharmacy from the University of California in San Francisco. After his formal education, Dr. Louie continued his post-graduate work at Pacific Presbyterian Medical Center in San Francisco where he was a pharmacy resident. In addition to clinical training, he continued his basic science training at the Kuzell Institute, where he served as Associate of Research in Molecular Biology.

His work while at the Kuzell Institute focused on the mechanism and regulation of hematopoiesis in bone marrow transplantation, and immune response against infections. Following his training at the Kuzell Institute, he joined the University of Southern California where he continued his work at the Kenneth Norris Cancer Research Institute. While in Norris Cancer Institute, he continued his work on cytokine regulation and immunomodulation.

Presently, he is Associate Professor at University of Southern California, School of Pharmacy and Family Medicine, where he is concentrating his work on virally-link tumors, and cytokine regulation of various disorders. His work has contributed to finding a treatment for human T-lymphotropic virus I (HLTV-I) link acute T-cell leukemia (ATL). Dr. Louie and his collaborators found that the combination of nucleoside analogs like zidovudine in combination with interferon-a was an effective agent in the treatment of ATL. He followed up this work by elucidating the cytokine pathway that regulated the proliferation of AIDS-related Kaposi’s sarcoma. His work has added to the understanding of AIDS-KS proliferation. More recently, he and his collaborators were able to use a non-cytotoxic regimen in the treatment of AIDS-KS, human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG). This work described the antitumor and physiological effect of peptide hormones on HIV patients.

Unlike the traditional pharmacologists, Dr. Louie interfaces molecular biology with pharmacokinetics. He is able to design and execute a board spectrum of assays to elucidate not only drug disposition questions, but provide insights into pharmacodynamics of various drug combinations. This unique skill is important in the understanding the various effect of biological agents in the HIV setting. His skills will enable him to understand the various intracellular signaling that may occur when various pharmacological agents are combined with biologicals. More importantly, Dr. Louie recently completed a sabbatical in molecular biology under the tutelage of Debbie Johnson, Ph.D., who is an establish intracellular signaling expert working in TATA binding protein (TBP). He has board molecular biology skills as well as traditional drug assaying skills such as HPLC and mass spectrometry.

Recently, Dr. Louie has expanded his interested into the pharmacogenetics. He is particularly interested in understanding why patients who fail HAART when patients are compliant. He is employing gene array technology to help him in his efforts. Presently he is putting together various protocols to evaluate whether drug combinations are able to alter lipid metabolism.

His continual accomplishments were recognized when he was installed as a Fellow of both California Society and American Society of Health-system Pharmacists.
